Daly Wins Exelon Invitational
The 8th Annual Exelon Invitational was held Monday June 5 at The ACE Club near Philadelphia. For those that have never heard of the Exelon Invitational, it is a skins match hosted by Jim Furyk. Jim invites 3 PGA Tour members to compete for a prize pool of $300,000 and the proceeds go to the Boys and Girls Club. The best part about the event is the access the public gets to the players. Ticketing is limited so there is ample room to get close and really see, hear and feel what is going on. Much like a practice round on tour the players are friendly and autograph their way around the course.
This year’s event saw the return of John Daly for his 3rd appearance. John always brings color and excitement to any tournament and this one was no different. During the clinic held before the start of the match a fan asked about fitness regiments and Daly referenced his one armed curls as the only exercise he has ever done. John also attempted to hit a passing school bus by hooking his driver on the range and managed to convince the crowd that practice was wasted on him since it cuts into his drinking time. The crowd ate up the routine and as ever John Daly proves why he is one of the most loved figures on the PGA Tour.
Two other PGA players joined Furyk and Daly for the match, Sean O’Hair and Adam Scott. Sean, a Pennsylvania resident was received well by the local crowd, and Adam Scott was received well by the females in attendance. Unfortunately, Jim Furyk pulled a muscle earlier that morning and was forced to withdraw from the competition leaving us with a three man skins match. Each player managed to win some money but the champion of the day was John Daly. As he passed the $100,000 mark he quipped to the crowd that at least one of his alimony payments was covered for the month.
The day was a success for the fans, the players and the Boys and Girls club. I highly recommend coming out to the smaller tournaments and particularly this one. Furyk always manages to get top players to come to the event, two years ago Mickleson played and last year Mike Weir and Reteif Goosen came. The ACE Club is a beautiful course that adds to the enjoyment of the day. There is so much space and elevated viewing areas that seeing the players is never an issue. Get your tickets to the 2007 Exelon Invitational and enjoy a wonderful day of golf.

I love John Daly, even though he seems to be a freakshow.
