The Daily Shag: Square Drivers Flying Off the Shelves...

SQUARE IS THE NEW BLACK
You see... What did BogeyMan Say? These things look hot and hit even hotter. Resistance is futile.

“We’ve had great reaction to the new drivers, even selling out of several brands within one to two days of their release,” said Sven Kessler, National Retail Director for Edwin Watts Golf. “You know when someone is in the hitting room with the new square drivers. The ball sounds like it’s been shot out of a cannon. Everybody is going to want to try these clubs.”

WHAT THE FULKE?
While most of us middle-aged hackers hope to drop 20 strokes in order to make an improbable run on the Champions Tour, this dude is quitting a carrer in pro golf because he's tired of the travel. Whatever!

Former European Ryder Cup player and Volvo Masters champion Pierre Fulke has announced his retirement at the age of 36.

"I'm not tired of golf but I'm tired of the travel," Fulke told the Swedish Golf Federation's Web site. "It feels good to sleep in my own bed.

FINALLY! A LOPEZ THAT BELONGS ON THE COURSE
"Watching Paula (Creamer) and Natalie (Gulbis) and all the young players hit the ball, I would sit there and say, ‘I remember when I hit it just like that,"’ Lopez said. "It just motivated me to think maybe I can do it one more time. Let’s see what my body says."

Funny thing... when I watch Paula and Natalie hit the ball, I think of when I used to "hit it" just like that too.

MASTER OF A NEW DOMAIN?
Tiger Woods joined elite company Wednesday as one of only three players to host a PGA Tour event during their careers. Tiger becomes the youngest player to host a tournament. Bobby Jones was 32 when the Augusta National Invitation -- which later became the Masters -- was held in 1934. Nicklaus was 36 when the Memorial was played for the first time. Palmer was 44 when he took over at Bay Hill, and Byron Nelson had been long retired when he gave his name to a tournament in Dallas.

"Not too many people are fortunate to have an opportunity like this," Woods said. "What Bobby Jones did for golf and starting the Masters, that won't be touched. As far as what Jack has done at the Memorial, or Arnold at Bay Hill or Mr. Nelson in Dallas, those have been true legends of the game. They made a tremendous impact on our sport. "I want to build something along that level," he said. "Obviously, with my competitive nature, I want it to be better."
